Context Menu (Shortcut Menu)
A context or shortcut menu is a pop-up menu that is displayed when you right click on an object. The options displayed are frequently used commands relating to the selected object. The right click menu can be used in the following applications: Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Word, Notepad, Spreadsheet documents, image files, audio records or on most anything you can place your mouse arrow or cursor. The most frequent tasks are copying files and folders, opening them with different programs and sending files by email. These operations can be performed by using the context (right click) menu.
To open a context menu:
- Right-click the mouse when the cursor or pointer is over the appropriate object.
- Select an option from the menu.
.
Examples:
- While browsing the Internet you see an Image that you would like to copy. Place your mouse pointer over the image and right click. A pop-up menu will be displayed (Figure 1) with the options that you can perform . Click on “Save Image As…” then name and save the image in a folder on your computer.

- While typing a Microsoft Word document you type a word, which you would like to replace with a synonym. In the Figure 2 we want to replace the word “fast” with a synonym. Put the mouse cursor on the word “fast” then right-click. A pop-up menu will appear. Then move the mouse pointer to “Synonyms”. Another pop-up menu will give you all the synonyms for the word “fast”. Left click on one of the synonyms and it will replace the word “fast” with the word selected.
