Wallpaper is the background on the desktop ( The desktop is the display on the screen after the computer has turned on ). Like decorative wallpaper it enhances the office environment.
The Windows XP display properties window provides a number of default desktop background displays or you can use your own photo background.
To select the Background:
- Right click anywhere on the Desktop to bring up the menu.
- Click on Properties
- Click on the Theme Tab and make the selection from the drop down menu.
- Click on Apply to view the full screen background.
- If you like the theme then click on OK.
If you are not satisfied or there is a limited selection, do the following:
- Right click on the Desktop
- Click on Properties
- On the Desktop tab, in the Background menu, select a background to display.
- Click on Apply to view the full screen background.
- If you like the display, then click on OK. If not select another.
This is fine however I like to use a photograph I choose as desktop background, not the defaults.
I have found that the best backgrounds are dark colors because the desktop icons stand out very well. Also photos, which mean something to you, as hobbies, travel, children or pets, are good subjects.
The following desktop backgrounds are ones I use on two computers. Since my hobbies are travel, photography and Corvette restoration I chose a photo on the left below that I took in the Bay of Naples of Mount Vesuvius at sunset as a storm was moving in. The photo on the right I downloaded from the National Corvette Museum.
The following is the procedure to customize your Desktop background.
- Select the photo you have stored in a file on your computer that you would like to use.
- Display the photo in a thumbnail or in any other application.
- Right-click the photo and then click Set as Desktop Background.
Another procedure would be:
- Right click on the Desktop
- Click on Properties
- Click on the Desktop Tab,
- Click on Browse and navigate to the photo to be selected.
- Click on the photo.
- Click on Open
- Click on Apply to view the full Screen background.
- If you like the display then click on OK, if not Browse to select another photo.
