COMPUTER TIP OF THE MONTH (For Microsoft Windows)

Disk Cleanup

By Ed Vignone

Is your PC getting sluggish? Does it take a long time to boot and shut down? You may need to purge the recycle bin and delete files that programs have created but never deleted. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk by searching your disk for files that can be safely deleted.

There are a number of ways to access the Disk Cleanup tool. However, I believe the following method is the simplest.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type cleanmgr, and then click OK.

Select a disk drive to clean from the Drives box drop down menu, and then click OK

A Disk Cleanup popup will display that it is calculating and scanning files to be deleted. When it is finished it will display a Disk Cleanup popup.

In the Disk Cleanup popup, you should only check the boxes in Temporary Internet Files, Offline WebPages, Recycle Bin and Temporary Files, then Click OK. CAUTION! DELETING OTHER FILES MAY NOT BE SAFE AND MAY CAUSE YOUR SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION!

Click Yes in the next popup. After this utility is finished, the selected Disk will be free of non-essential files.

Happy Computing!!
