GARDENING TIP OF THE MONTH

Crabgrass

Crabgrass is one big nuisance in our lawn. This aggressive, ugly grass can overtake a lawn. In discussions with horticulturists we must be very persistent in our efforts to eliminate this from our lawns.

Not only has it invaded our lawn, but nearly every outdoor flower pot has crabgrass growing in it.

The best prevention is to use Scott’s Halts Plus lawn fertilizer and crabgrass preventer. This is effective against the pre-emergence from the seed. It will do nothing for the crabgrass that is already infested.

According to local horticulturists, we are seeing an influx of this grass in our area. We must be diligent in our treatments.

There are two products you should consider. First, there is Bayer All-In-One Weed Killer. This is supposed to kill 200 different weeds including crabgrass. The second is Green Light’s Crabgrass Killer 2. I plan to use both and see which is more effective. The first application will be to use test spots to see if the good grass is unharmed. I will have a report on the effectiveness of these two products next month.

To help you determine the good grass from the crabgrass, a photo is included that shows the crabgrass. Note it’s ‘round’ shape. Runners grow out 360 degrees from the central root ball. Also, it seems to be a lighter green than the regular fescues and Marathon grasses.
